Ch 7 Budget Plan

For this project I choose the career of interpreter and translator. The university I want to attend is Stanford; the 4 years tuition is $154800, room fee is $26800, board is $20704, and also the books cost about $5940. according to http://articles.sfgate.com/2008-02-20/news/17142684_1_stanford-5-endowment-tuition-financial-aid, a change in Stanford financial aid program said students whose family's earning in a year that is less than $100000 do not need to pay for tuition, also if it is less than $60000 then room and board fees will be waive. Since my parents income didn't exceed these 2 amounts, I am qualify for this financial aid program. The book fees that is left behind can be pay by my parents.

After university, I will also take a online medical interpreter training program that is based on the standard of International Medical Interpreters Association.

According to www.cultureadvantage.org/payments.html, I have to pay $585 for Fast Tract one-time fee and $110 for taking the challenge exam. My parents also agreed to pay the tatal of $695 for me.

This is the salary chart for the career I choose: The place I want to live in is a studio at Daly City, CA. The rent is $975 per month (water and garbage included). I will ride the bus for transportation with a bus pass purchase at $80 per month.

Work: medical interpreter/translator in San Mateo Medical Center in california.

Benefits:

Retirement Plan: 401K

Every month I am estimate to have $705 left over.

Ch6 Curve Fitting With Polynomial Models

The first thing I need to do is go to YAHOO Finance to find the opening prices of the my stock, GAP, and the index S&P500 for the years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004.Then I types the datas in the calculator and used STAT to find the functions, I choose quartic regression because the correlation coefficients are closest to 1. Next I usesd the graph to estimates the prices of 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011; afterward I go to YAHOO Finance to find the actual prices, but the estimations and the real prices don't match. Finally, I went online to check the news of what is happening in U.S. that affect the opening prices.

In 2002, the prices don't match, because on September 11 the terrorist bomb the buildings in U.S.The stock decrease because peaople are scare of dangers when went out to spend their money. The S&P500 prices drop a little because people are trading their stocks in fears.

GAP cut prices on the fleece and down jackets in Nov. and early Dec. in 2005 attracting more customers, therefore the stock rised (but still doesn't match the estimate price). S&P500 decreased because Hurricane Katrina destroy the cradle of jazz, New Orleans, distrubing the stock market.

In 2006, my stock decreased and my index increase because sales fell by 1.5% by the end of Jan.

2008 estimation didn't match probably because of the 2008 stock market crash. However the affects is not as big because it mostly affects the banks.

In 2010, the stock is increasing a little beacause after Barack Obama become the presidents he tried to improve the economy, so people can spend more. But the index decreased because people are still afraid of another stock market crash so they are not very active in trading and buying stocks in the stock market.

In 2010, both the stock and S&P500 increased because the progress of economy recovering is good, more jobs are created and so people are not as worry about losing and spending their money.

Many of the predictions didn't came close to the real prices is maybe the graphs are not very suit for the datas. Of course the real world events also set the prices off.

CA "Cyber-Bully" Law

One law that takes effect on 1/1/2011 is CA Senate Bill 1411, introduced by CA State Senator Joe Simitian. The law focus on impersonating another person by internet (using email, online forums and social media). False twitter messages or falsely creating Facebook pages under another person's name to harass and embarrass other people would now be consider breaking the new law. The penalties includes a fine up to $1000 and/or up to 1 year in jail.

High Cost on Remedial College Classes

Even though high school students had their high school diploma, research show 1/3 of them still have to take remedial college classes on materials they were supposed to learn in high school. These classes cost taxpayers billion of of dollars every year. Some students that had to take remedial classes had 3.0-4.0 GPA in their high school years, they thought they are prepared for the level of materials they faced, but it is not so. The teaching institution and students have not met the expectation they are supposed to reach in order to prepared for college.

3D Graph

In this project I have to bulid a model of the 3-D coordinate system and graph an equation with 3 variables. The equation my group choose is x+4y+2=4. The section I choose to do is (-x,y,z). Before graphing I have to change the equation to -x+4y+2z=4, then I find the intercepts. The intercepts are (-4,0,0), (0,1,0), and (0,0,2). I plot the 3 points on the (-x,y,z) section and connect it.

Ch 3.4 Linear Programming

For this chapter 4 linear programming project, we have to came up with a problem and graph it. My problem was : I went to the store to purchase books for the 14 days Christmas break. I could finish an English book in 2 days and a Chinese book in 5 days. The store is doing a holiday discount, every English book cost $2.50 and every Chinese book cost $4. The most I plan to spend on books are $24. C represents the number of Chinese books, e is the numbers of English books. The constraints are :
1) c is greater than or equal to 0
2) e is greater than or equal to 0
3) 5c+2e is less than or equal to 14
4) 4c+5e is less than or equal to 24
On the image above I have graph each constraints separately. I shade the first constraint with pink, the second constraint with yellow. To graph the third one I plot the intercepts and connect it with a solid line, than I shade below that line with blue. For the last constraints I used the same process but this time I shade below it with red. When I overlap the 4 constraints together I get the final result. The part where all colors overlap is the feasible region, which is shaded brown above. By looking at the final result you can see that the vertices are : (0,0) , (2.8,0) , (0,4.8) , and (1.3,3.9)

Ch.2 Project

I have choose the MINI Cooper for my chapter 2 project. I found out the mileage for the car in http://www.mpgforspeed.com/. For the speeds 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80 in miles per hour, the mileage (miles per gallon) are 37, 35.9, 34, 30.7, 28.5, 26.6 . Next I plot the points using speed as the independent variables and the mileage as the dependent variables. Since the points are going down, the graph have a negative slope that mean it also have a negative correlation. Next, I sketch the line best fit on the graph. The 2 points I choose to find the slope with is (60,35.9) and (80,26.6); doing the calculation Y1 - Y2 over X1 - X2 I got the slope -9.3/20. To use the informations I already have to write an equation I set up the point-slope form first which is y-26.6=-9.3/20(x-80) turning it to slope-intercept form the equation is y=-9.3/20x+63.8 . Using the calculator to find the value of correlation coefficient r, r=-.9917995234. The value of r tell me that the as speed get higher is the mileage will go lower, because r is close -1 coefficient. By using the graphing calculator to find the equation for the line best fit I get y=-.4428571429x+62.00952381 . To predict the mileage for a speed of 55 miles per hour, I type in : y(55) in my calculator, the mileage is 38 (miles per gallon). To predict the speed if the milage is 28 miles per gallon we can't use the same method because 28 is y in the equation, so I plug 28 in as y, 28=-.4428571429x+62.00952381. After isolating x (speed) the answer is 77 miles per hour.

Graphing Function

The fuction I choose on this graph is the absolute value fuction, which is y=x draw in black, after this I can do Transformation to the function which is changing it from the orginal. To graph the reflection of y=x multiply by (-1), you get y=-x draw in purple above. After the vertical translation, shift 5 units up, it can be written as y=x+5; in the graph above the whole thing move up in the vertical line-the coordinates for the y-axis is 5. For horizontal translation it was also shifting 5 units, but not on the vertical line but on the horizontal line-the coordinates for the x-axis is 5,because y=x-5 it has a subtract sign inside so we move it 5 units to the right from 0. Combining horizontal and vertical translation it can be written as y=x-5+5 ,the +5 was outside so we shift up on the vertical line then right 5 units because there is the -5 inside. To graph the reflection of the function after the horizontal and vertical translation you have only have to multiply the whole thing with (-1) then you get y=-x-5-5.

CH 1 Real World Function by Min Ying Zero

This assignment is about graphing functions and relations with 2 variables for a real world situation. A relation is set of order pairs (x,y), with input values (x) pairing output values (y). In a function there is exactly one y-value for each x-value; a relation is a function if it pass the vertical line test on the graph. In the reasonable graph for our real world situation, the value of variable depend on the other variable. So the Domain(x-value) is the independent variables and the range(y-value) is the dependent variables for our graph.

We worked in pairs for this project, and me and my partner Thanh Quotient decided to use Classroom Numbers at Oakland high as our real world example. Every time we walk into a classroom a classroom we find a teacher per classrooms, and when we walk into other classrooms we find other teachers. We then walk into different multiple classrooms and find that it is true for each trial that every classroom has different teacher. This situation is known as a Function. But say you are not familiar with a teacher's classroom number and you ask a student walking to class and you don't feel like saying their full last name, and so you say “hey where can I find Mr. B's class room?” and the student you are asking says “uhmm his class room is in 215.” But little did the student walking to class know that you were really asking about Mr. Brights classroom BUT he gives you the room number to Mr. Brooke's classroom. So you walk into Mr. Brooke's classroom and find that this is the same teacher as the other Mr. B's room. In this case, there are two possible outcomes for each Mr. B's classroom you ask for. Therefore, this would be called a relation.

Min Ying Zero

My name is Min Ying. The schools I have attended were La Escuelita Elementary School, Westlake Middle School, and I'm now a 9th grader in Oakland High. I haven't had a job yet. I think I want to be a children nurse when I'm an adult, but right now I just want to focus my goal on going to university after graduating from high school. My favorite thing to do is tutoring my cousin's child.
