CH 7 How to do Make a Budget





Ch 7 Math Project

Overview: I want to become a surgeon so this is a map of how i will achieve my goal. I plan to go to Stanford University as a Pre-med student. I will take advantage of the financial aid offered there which will cover all of my expenses. After 4 years of undergraduate school, I will go to UCSF for medical school which is another 4 years. They also have financial aid which could pay for all of my tuition and I qualify for this because I had the disadvantage of coming from a poor background. During my graduate schooling, i will be living with my parents to save money. I will also be taking a part time job as a bank teller. It pays $10/hour. After graduate school, I will move to Los Angeles to begin my residency program at Kaiser Permanente L.A medical center which is another 4 years. The job pays $50,719 per year. In L.A, I will buy a house and a car to use as transportation. I will stick with this job for the next 4 years.

Summary: The purpose of this project was to map out our future. My map was the map of how I would become a general surgeon. I now realize there are a lot of steps to get to my goal but this project has also shown me that it is possible because I had to research how I would get there. It has also taught me things I never knew about such as grants and the amount of schooling it takes to become a surgeon.

3D Graph




For my project, I worked with 7 other people to express the way things are graphed in 3 dimensions. In our group, our original equation was x+4y+2z=4. But for my assignment I had to change the y into a negative, creating x-4y+2z=4. That meant I had to create a corner showing a positive x, negative y, and positive z. I found the intercepts to be (4,0,0), (0,-1,0), and (0,0,2). I first plotted them on the graph and then graph then yarn through the points creating a plane. When I and my partners put together the corners it shared all the parts of the 3d model.

Ch 3.4 Linear Programming



I choose “Lolly Pops!” as my project title. My problem is: Jane is making lollypops to raise money for her students. She needs at most $20 to split it evenly and fairly between her students. She will make chocolate and vanilla lollypops. Chocolate lollypops are $2.50 and vanillas are $5. It cost her $3 to make chocolate and $2 to make vanilla. She can’t spend up to $12. Next, I write my constraints, which is:
1. X is greater than or equal to 0
2. Y is greater than or equal to 0
3. 2.5x+5y is less than or equal to 20
4. 3x+2y is less than or equal to 12
After I write out my constraints, I graph each of them separately. Then, I combine all the graphs into one graph and there is my feasible region. Lastly, I would find the vertices of quadrilateral that is created by the feasible regions, which is : (0,0), (4,0), (2,3), and(0,4).

Ch 2 project- Ford Mustang


For my chapter 2 project, I chose the Ford Mustang. The mileage for the speeds: 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, and 80 were 30, 29.1, 27.6, 24.9, 23.1, and 21.6. I knew I had a negative correlation because I had a negative slope. Then I sketched the line of best fit, while trying to get as many points on the line as possible. I then chose 2 points on the graph, (80, 21.6) and (70, 24.9), and found the slope (by using the slope formula) which was -.33. Then to find the equation I had to use the point slope form, then turning it into slope intercept form and I got y= -.33x + 48. I had to use the calculator to find the correlation coefficient r and got r= -.9914. This told me that as the speed gets higher the mileage will get lower, because it’s reaching the – 1 coefficient. Also when using the calculator I was able to find the equation for the line of best fit, which was y= -.3582x + 50.2342. To predict the mileage for a speed of 55 mph, I plugged in 55 for X and solved for y and I got 30.5332 miles per gallon. To predict the speed if the mileage is28 I plugged in 28 for y and solved for x and I got 62.87202 miles per hour.

Ch 1 Real World Functions


For our real world functions we did the cast of twilight and their birth cities. The domain was the cast of twilight and the range was the cities they were born in. Functions are relations (any subset of a Cartesian product) that require the domains to have only one range each so we we made it the cast and the places they born and we knew it would work because there is only one city a person can be born in. Our independent variable was twilight stars and the dependent variable were the birthplaces.

Ch 1 Graphing Functions

In this graph, I used the parent function of x to the second power (graphed in the color black). This graph has many transformations. They include vertical translation (red) which is when I moved the graph 3 units down (y=x^2-3), horizontal translation (blue) Which is when I moved the graph 4 units left (y=(x+4)^2) , vertical + horizontal translation (green) when I moved the graph 3 units down and 4 units left (y= (x+4)^2-3), vertical reflection across the x-axis (purple) when I flipped the graph upside down (y= -x^2) , and vertical + horizontal reflection across the x-axis (also black) which flipped the graph (y= -(x+4)^2 +3)upside also. When you perform a reflection across the x-axis the points on the y-axis change.
