Ch1 Real World Functions

For our real world function, my partner sharmane and I chose 9th grader's, in Ms.Abernethy's 3rd period class, 1st period classes. Our Independent Variables are the students. And the Dependent Variables are the 1st period teachers. Our Domain are the 9th grade students' names. {Christine, Sharmane, MinYing}. And the Range are the 1st period teachers' names. {Ms.Gao, Ms.Citragno, Mr.Tam}. For our graph to be a function each student must only have one 1st period student. An example is that Sharmane only has Ms.Citragno as her 1st period teacher. When our graph is not a function it must mean that the counselors messed up someones schedule and gave them 2 different 1st period classes. That means they would have 2 different teachers. For example, if my schedule said that I had Mr.Tam and Ms.Gao 1st period I would be confused and not know which class to go to. It also means that my schedule could not be a real schedule.

For our real world function, my partner Kent & I chose to do movies that are played in theaters. On the independent variable are the movies that was played in theaters. On the dependent variable are the number of theaters that the movies were played in. The domains are, {Despicable Me, Alice In Wonderland, Inception, Toy Story 3, Iron Man 2, Eclipse} & the ranges are, {3,602 , 3,739 , 3,792 , 4,026 , 4,390 , 4,468}. A function is when there is exactly one Y (output) for every X (input) whereas a relation is when there is more than one Y for one X. Our function fails when 100 more theaters were built and specifically played Eclipse, which created two Y's for one X. So this made it a relation.

Ch 1. Real World Functions

We are Team Pie, (Johnny & Melinda). For our real life function project, we chose to do animals and their habitats. The domains would be: {goldfish, camel, monkey, nemo, frog} and the ranges would be: {freshwater, desert, jungle, saltwater, swamp}. The independent variable is the type of animal and the dependent variable is their habitat. For this relation to be a function, each animal would have their own habitat. For this relation to not be a function, an animal would have to live in a different habitat, one that they couldn’t survive in. So, if the monkey decides to live in the saltwater for some reason and died because it couldn’t get used to that kind of habitat, it wouldn’t be a function. It wasn’t a function when the vertical line test was tested upon the graph because it passed through 2 points.

(Team Pie) For our real life function, my partner Johnny & I chose animals and their habitats. Our independent variable was the type of animal and the dependent variable was their habitat, where they live. In order for this relation to be a function, each animal would have their own habitat. For this relation to not be a function, an animal would have to live in a habitat that they couldn't acclimate to. Let's say the monkey decided to try out the saltwater and died because it couldn't get used to that kind of habitat where you have to be able to breathe underwater. So, it wasn't a function when we tried out the vertical line test on the graph because it passed through 2 points.

Ch. 1: Real World Functions.

My real world function was about the different types of tacos and their prices. My partner for this project was Donald. My dependent variable was the price of the taco. My independent variable was the type of taco. The domain was the type of taco and the range was the price of the tacos. Our function worked when there was only one type of taco with one price. Our function becomes a relation when someone orders two of the same tacos which increases the price(output) but is still the same taco(input). We determined if the graphs were a function when we used the vertical line test. If more than one point passes through the vertical line test then the function is a relation.

Ch 1 Real World Functions Tacos

The Real world function is the types of tacos and their prices. The Domain and Independent variable is the type of taco. The Range and Dependent Variable is the price of taco. To determine how our function will fail, a person must order two or more of the same tacos. This creates a relation. A relation is the input values where there is more than one output value and a function is the input values where there is more ONLY one output value. The first graph is a function, but the second graph is a relation because two points pass through the line.

Ch1 Real Life Function project

I did my chapter 1 project on New Moon stars and their birth cities. The independent variables are Stars' names. The dependent variables are the stars' birth cities. The domains are: {Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed, Jackson Rathbone}. And the ranges are: { Los Angeles, London, Grand Rapids, Jacksonville, Queens, Bloomfield, Dickenson, West Los Angeles, Singapore}.

Real Life Functions

This is my Real Life Functions with my teammate Lan. Our Independent Variable was the different types of sodas we had. Our Dependent Variable is the number of calories in each of our sodas. So our Domain is the sodas and Range is the number of calories. The function will fail because each soda has different a chance of being in a different container, can, or bottle. This will mean that the calories would not be the same for each same brand of soda so that would make this a relation.

Ch1 Real World Functions

For our real world function, my partner Christine and I chose 1st period classes in Ms.Abernethy's 3rd period Algebra2 class. By doing this, we found out 1st period classes of 9th graders in Ms. Abernethy's 3rd period class. Listed down their Name, Subject, and Teacher for their first period. Our independent variable are the students. Our dependent variable are their teachers for 1st period. For our Domain, we used the 9th grade students names. {Christine, Sharmane, MinYing}. For the Range, we used the teachers for their 1st period classes. {Ms.Gao, Ms.Citragno, Mr.Tam}. For this to be a function, only one student can have one teacher for 1st period. For example, Christine has only Ms.Gao's science class for first period. For this NOT to be a function, one student would have more than one class for 1st period. For example, the counselor messed up Christine's schedule and she'd have both Ms.Gao AND Mr.Tam for 1st period. This will not work out because she wouldn't know which class to go to.

To test if this is correct, we used the vertical-line test on the graph. If there are two points or more for one student (the vertical line), then the relation is NOT a function.

Real World Function CH1 by Zekai function

For my Real World Function Project, my topic was words and numbers of letters. The domains are the words and the ranges are the numbers of letters. Each word is unique. For this relation to be a function, each word only has one number of letters. My independent variables are words and dependent variables are numbers of letters. For this relation to be not a function, one word has two numbers of letters. That is impossible. For example, I have word "Duck". "Duck" was formed by four letters. Each word is unique. So its numbers of letters should be unique. But then "Duck" has seven letters. That is impossible. So the function was failed.

CH 1 Real World Functions

NOTE:
-Top picture is a function
-Bottom picture is a relation

So me & my partner Ashley (Team AAT) decided to do our real world functions on movies that are played in theaters. For our independent variable, it was the movies that was played in the theaters. For our dependent variable, it was the number of movie theaters that the movies was played in. Our domain, which is the movies are {Despicable Me, Alice In Wonderland, Inception, Toy Story 3, Iron Man 2, Eclipse}. The range, which is the number of movie theaters are {3,602, 3,739, 3,792, 4,026, 4,390, 4,468}. A graph is a function if for every x value, there is exactly one unique value of y.
So the top picture is a function because for every movie, there is a specific number of movie theaters that played the movies. A relation is basically the opposite of a function, so that makes the bottom picture a relation, because 100 more theaters were built and the theater specifically played Eclipse. Also it did not pass the vertical line test.

Ch 1 Real World Functions

For our real world functions we did the cast of twilight and their birth cities. The domain was the cast of twilight and the range was the cities they were born in. Functions are relations (any subset of a Cartesian product) that require the domains to have only one range each so we we made it the cast and the places they born and we knew it would work because there is only one city a person can be born in. Our independent variable was twilight stars and the dependent variable were the birthplaces.

For our real world function we chose skittles. The independent variables are the colors of the skittles and the dependent variables are the flavors of the skittles. The domain is {red, orange, yellow, green, purple} and the range is {strawberry, orange, lemon, lime, grape}. Our function is a linear parent function because each color skittle only has one flavor. But, in our relation the candy factory makes a slight mistake and made a red skittle grape flavor. This definitely not a function because when I did the vertical line test it passed through two points.

This is me and my partner's world function for Chapter 1. We decided that we should pick a unique topic so we came up with numbers and words, how many letters are in each word. A function is when there is only one y-value for every x-value. The opposite of a function is a relation, or when there are more than one y-value for every x-value. Our independent variables are the different types of words. Our dependent variables are the amount of letters in each word. our function domain are the different types of words(friction, mineral, lucid, identified, phone, cake, destiny, facade, polygons and flower). Our function range are the number of letters in each word(8,7,5,9,5,4,7,6,8 and 6).Our function fails when a word has the wrong amount of letters, because if one spells a word and leaves out a letter than the word is spelled incorrectly therefore our function is a relation.

Real World Function Ch1 by Thanh Quotient

This assignment is about graphing functions and relations with 2 variables for a real world situation. A relation is set of order pairs (x,y), with input values (x) pairing output values (y). In a function there is exactly one y-value for each x-value; a relation is a function if it pass the vertical line test on the graph. In the reasonable graph for our real world situation, the value of variable depend on the other variable. So the domain(x-value) is the independent variables and the range(y-value) is the dependent variables for our graph.

We worked in pairs for this project, and me and my partner MinYing Zero decided to use Classroom Numbers at Oakland high as our real world example. Every time we walk into a classroom a classroom we find a teacher per classrooms, and when we walk into other classrooms we find other teachers. We then walk into different multiple classrooms and find that it is true for each trial that every classroom has different teacher. This situation is known as a Function. But say you are not familiar with a teacher's classroom number and you ask a student walking to class and you don't feel like saying their full last name, and so you say “hey where can I find Mr. B's class room?” and the student you are asking says “uhmm his class room is in 215.” But little did the student walking to class know that you were really asking about Mr. Brights classroom BUT he gives you the room number to Mr. Brooke's classroom. So you walk into Mr. Brooke's classroom and find that this is the same teacher as the other Mr. B's room. In this case, there are two possible outcomes for each Mr. B's classroom you ask for. Therefore, this would be called a relation.

Ch 1 Real World Functions

By Ellie Cosine (team cosine)

For our real world function we did Disney movies and when they were made. The domain are the movies and the range are when the movies are made. For this to be a function only one year can match with one movie. If there were two movies for one year then it would fail as a function. Our independent variable are the movies and our dependent variable are when they were made. Our graph will not be a function when you add put a random year to one of the movies. For example, putting a random year to Toy Story 3 will make it a relation.

Our real world function is tv remote and the tv channels. The remote buttons are the inputs and the tv channels are the outputs. We are doing 10 channels. For this relation to be a function, for every button it has to go to a channel arccording to the number button. Button 1 goes to channel 1, button 2 goes to channel 2. For it to not be a function, a button can have a chance to go to another channel oter than what its suppose to go to. For example button 1 goes to channel 1 and 11, that would not be a function. The domains are all the buttons and the range are the channels. Most of the time it's not a function because it depends on what cable you have. Different cables channel 5 are different channels

This is our Real World Function project for Chapter 1. We chose to use the number of calories in different types of sodas for our project. A function is function when there are only one y-value for every x-value. A function is not a function when there are more than one y-value for every x-value which is also called a relation. Our independent variable are the different types of sodas and our dependent variable are the number of calories in the sodas. Our domain are the sodas and our range are the number of calories. Our function fails when the sodas are in different container sizes and the amounts in the container. Some containers contains 12 oz. of soda and some contains 20 oz. so the number of calories will be greater or lesser if the container is bigger or smaller for each type of sodas which also means that there are more than one y-value(# of calories) for every x-value(types of soda) so therefore it's called relation so our function failed.

Ch 1 Real World Function Project

By David Alg2
Equals(David Alg2 and Michael Negative)
This is our Real World Function Project for Ch 1. We learned in our class about functions and relations. We had to choose a real world one to graph for our project. Me and my partner, Michael decided to choose Tv Remote as our real world function. For our project the independent variable was the buttons in the remote. Our dependent variable was all the different channels. Our domain was all the buttons and range was the channels. Our function fails when you press 1 or any number and goes to any channel that is not suppose to go to. It happens if the Y value(channels) contain more than 1 when we use the vertical test. We prove that it is not a function most of the time, because they're are a lot of tv channels depending on the cable you have.
